Pronouns
How to Ask for and Use Pronouns Respectfully:
Start with your own: Introduce yourself with your pronouns (e.g., “Hi, I’m Maya, and I use she/her pronouns”). This sets a welcoming tone and signals safety.
Ask, don’t assume: If you're unsure of someone’s pronouns, it’s okay to politely ask, “What pronouns do you use?” or “Can I ask your pronouns?” Avoid guessing based on appearance or name.
Practice using them: If someone uses unfamiliar pronouns, practice using them until it feels natural. Respect means effort.
Correct gently and move on: If you make a mistake, correct yourself and continue without making it a big deal. If you hear someone else use the wrong pronouns for someone, a simple correction like “Actually, they use…” can make a big difference.
